Slough Creek is located in the northern reaches of Yellowstone National Park. It tumbles into the park from the Gallatin National Forest and flows through three of the most picturesque back country meadows imaginable. We’ll travel nine miles by horseback to the uppermost waters of the Third Meadow, and spend three nights in a back country site perched above the creek with outstanding views of Gunsight Peak.
Slough Creek is known throughout the fly fishing community as a world-class dry fly fishery, and for good reason. Not only is it one of the few remaining Yellowstone Cutthroat trout fisheries, but it boasts a huge diversity of aquatic and terrestrial insects which bring those native fish to the surface time and time again. We like to visit Slough Creek in the prime of terrestrial season allowing us to capitalize on a cutthroat’s biggest weakness – big, foamy, rubber-legged dry flies. Nothing compares to the suspense of sight-fishing to Slough Creek’s 16-20” fish. Watching their slow rise and aggressive take on the surface is enough to make even the most seasoned angler weak in the knees.
Our three night adventure in Slough Creek is perfect for all levels and abilities of rider and fly fisher. Riding terrain is slow and gentle, and the ride to camp is roughly three hours. Once in camp, you can hop off your horse, pat him on the butt, and focus on fishing for three days. The diversity of fishing situations keeps all levels of fly fishers occupied. Experienced anglers will love the challenge of sight fishing to individual fish in the flat open water, while novices can cut their teeth on smaller aggressive fish in the heavy runs.
This trip is the perfect mix of a little horseback riding, a little camping, and a whole lot of fishing.
